Bridge: adustable, ornamented, with brass adusters

VÁVRA, Alfons Frantisek Born 1901, died 1957 Prague Czech Republic. Son and pupil of Jana Baptisty Vávra, below. Established in Banská Bystrica, Slovakia, from 1920 under his father’s name. Joined by brother Karel, below, until 1925. Returned to Prague and opened a shop at 30 Jindrisska Street where he remained for the rest of his life. Assisted by son Alfons (II) and daughter Ludmilla, below. Produced guitars as well as violins, violas, cellos, and double basses. Also restoration and repair work. Violins often direct imitations of contemporary Italian makers such as Degani, also conventional copies of Stradivari and Guarneri. Golden-red varnish, sometimes lacking in transparency.
