Program Notes
The Sonata for Double Bass and Piano was composed in 1991 during graduate studies with Noel Da Costa. The work was commissioned by Jeffrey Turner of the Pittsburgh Symphony. It is in three movements: Allegro, Adagio, and Vivace.
The first movement is constructed upon a triplet motive first presented in the bass. This motive, which initially reaches into the lowest notes of the bass, is used throughout to demonstrate the variety of colors the bass can achieve in all of its registers. The rigorous use of thematic development also hearkens back to one of Roter's favorite composers, Ludwig van Beethoven.
The second movement is a lyrical adagio with long, expressive phrases. Ample use of harmonics can be found which lends a delicate timbre to the instrument. The third movement is a traditional rondo, jovial in nature, with a driving ostinato accompaniment in the piano.
